Kashmir

This is a series of images from the 2016 protests in Kashmir – a small valley in the middle of the Indian Himalayas. When Burhan Wani – who was the chief commander and poster boy of the Kashmiri militia Hizb-ul Mujahideen – was shot by indian forces, a wave of brutal protests broke out in the valley, causing more than a hundred civilian deaths. The period is today known as "The Burhan Aftermath".

The same night Burhan was shot, the Indian government had imposed strict curfews throughout the Kashmir valley, and all mobile data was cut off. Yet, thousands of people are coming from every direction to attend Burhans funeral in his hometown of Dadsara, Tral. By the end of the day, over 200.000 people has defied the curfew to pay their respects. One last affirmation of Burhans significance to the Muslim community of Kashmir.
